CHARBAY SHARES HANDCRAFTED TEQUILA BLANCO AT TAHOE FEST

(NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nevada) – The Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival welcomes a smooth, south-of-the-border kick this year, giving guests a glimpse, and a taste, of the recently unveiled Charbay Tequila Blanco.
The September 12th tasting at the Village at Northstar will feature Marko Karakasevic, a 13th generation distiller and an integral part of the creative force behind the Charbay Artisan Winery and Distillery in St. Helena. Marko will share his family’s authentic agave tequila, which he produced on-site at a distillery in Arandas, Jalisco. Tequila can only be produced in Mexico; Marko and his father Miles are the first American distillers to personally hand-distill 100 percent Blue Agave Tequila Blanco in Mexico.
“We have a friend with a distillery in Mexico, so it was essentially one family distillery working with another,” Marko Karakasevic said.
Marko notes that tequila is a complicated spirit, taking seven to ten years for an agave to mature, before they are then harvested, baked, pressed, fermented, distilled, then distilled again.
“From all the world's distilled spirits, tequila is by far one of the most challenging,” Miles Karakasevic said. “We combined the traditional methods of a classic distillery in the Arandas area with our proprietary Charbay distilling methods. We were able to be there in the fields where they picked the estate-grown agaves. We were beside the ovens as they baked. We guided the fermentation and we distilled following the wisdom of our 13 generations.”
Charbay spirits, which include aperitifs, pastis, grappa, rum and infused vodkas, are known for pure, high-quality ingredients and slow, artistic distilling process. Their tequila is double distilled in small 250-gallon copper Alambiques tequilano pot stills over three weeks. In addition to spending three years researching the process, the Karakasevics spent six weeks producing their newest creation. Only 1700 six packs are available.
"During the final distillation at 142-proof, our tequila tasted as if you were chewing on fresh chamomile buds,” Marko Karakasevic said. “Later, at 140-proof, it started to taste like cinnamon. At 138-proof, the flavors were of herbaceous, rich agave – with a peppery finish.”
The tasting, which starts at 5:45 p.m., will be paired with appetizers created by Chef Jason Gronlund, former executive chef and culinary director for Tabasco Brand Hot Sauces. Tickets cost $65 and include a signed 750 ml bottle of Charbay Tequila Blanco.
